New here?
Welcome. If you're reading this, you may be wondering whether you have a problem with alcohol, or you may already know you do. Either way, you're in the right place. Every one of us once walked into our first meeting not knowing what to expect.
Before you come
You don't need to bring anything, sign anything, or call ahead. There is no cost. Just show up a few minutes early if you can. Our Friday Beginners Meeting at 6:15 pm is a good first meeting, and anyone is welcome.
Finding the room
We meet in Room C171 on the lower floor of Johns Creek Baptist Church. Park in the back lot near Entrance E, walk down the outside stairs, go in the glass doors, and turn left down the long hallway to the end. The room is on your right.
When you walk in
Someone will probably say hello. You can tell them it's your first meeting, or not. Grab a seat anywhere. Coffee is usually on, water available, the book suggests chocolate and we have that too.
During the meeting
The meeting lasts one hour. Someone leads it and reads a short opening, and then members take turns sharing their experience. When it's your turn, you can talk, or you can simply say "I'll just listen." Many people listen for weeks before they share, and that's fine.
After the meeting
People often stay a few minutes to talk. Members may offer their phone numbers so you have someone to call between meetings. Take them. Calling another alcoholic before you pick up a drink is one of the most useful things you can do.
Common questions
Do I have to say I'm an alcoholic?
No. You never have to label yourself. You only need a desire to stop drinking.
What if I'm not sure I'm an alcoholic?
That's normal. Come and listen. Many of us weren't sure either.
Is A.A. religious?
No. A.A. is not tied to any religion. Members hold all kinds of beliefs, including none at all.
What if I see someone I know?
They're there for the same reason you are. What's said at a meeting, and who you see there, stays there.
Can I bring a friend or family member?
Yes, to our Friday Beginners Meeting or Birthday Meeting, which is open to anyone. Our other meetings are for people who want to stop drinking.
Does it cost anything?
No. A basket may be passed for voluntary contributions to cover rent, coffee, and candy. Newcomers are never expected to give.
Need help right now?
Stopping drinking suddenly after heavy daily use can be dangerous. If you've been drinking heavily, talk to a doctor before you stop. If you are having a medical emergency, call 911. If you are in crisis, call or text 988.
